Backup source does not exist!

Error

You see this error in the backup logs Backup source does not exist !
This normally happens with a UNC path to a NAS or network share.

Known causes

  1. The account running under the scheduler service (variants shown below) doesn’t have sufficient permissions to access the UNC path.

Version 7 (server)
The service is ‘Server Services’

Version 7 (desktop)
The service is ‘Desktop Services’

Version 6 (server)
The service is ‘Online Backup Scheduler (Server Backup)’

Version 6 (desktop)
The service is ‘Online Backup Scheduler (Desktop Backup)’

  1. This error can also happen if the backup source config file needs to be read in by the system again.

Fix

  1. Run a manual backup whilst logged on as a user which can browse the UNC path and its contents.
    If that backup works, substitute the account running under the scheduler service to the same as the logged on user.

  2. Make a minor change to the source selection or the excluded folders and save the backup.

The next time you run the backup, there shouldn’t be any more incorrect Backup source does not exist ! errors.
