We saw this error during a file system backup.

Because this was a file system backup, the error didn’t impact on the backup because there weren’t any locked or open files and the backup successfully.

The system had more than 1TB of free space and we didn’t see any VSS errors, but we saw this error in the Windows event logs Error: GetVolumeInformation, 0x80070002, The system cannot find the file specified.

Resolution

A full chkdisk and server reboot resolved the problem within Windows and the backup succeeded.
