Why does the Hyper V module back up AVHDX files?

Microsoft changed the way it backs up Hyper V guests when it released Windows 2012 R2.

Previously Microsoft had used VSS snapshots to back up VMs, but switched to using checkpoints in Windows 2012 R2.
The main reason is to improve the consistency of backups and prevent data loss following a failure.

This means your backup will also have the AVHDX files included and this will cost you slightly more than before.

We have a workaround for this and can discuss it once we know more about your environment.
